Today's show should explain the whole video clip that came (or should have come) earlier in the feed. I outline the rules for future video content, which I'll reiterate here.

I'm going to keep video content supplemental to the main audio show. I want it to be 'bonus' material that you can watch in iTunes, or on your new iPod video, but I'm such a fan of audio shows at this point that I don't see any reason to switch format. And... y'know.. I don't have an iPod video.

Since the video clip is of some hip-hop/rap performers here in Shanghai, I decided to talk for a few seconds about how difficult I think it is for the average Chinese to become interested in the hip-hop/rap world.

Oh, and I don't know anything about hip-hop/rap, so I may not be using the terminology correctly... But what am I going to do? Research? Bah.

HOW?!

The answer is pretty damn simple - Hip hop= Music=Art. People like Art; Art doesn't need language
Got it?
You've got to be pretty stupid to think of such a question...
plus, very very narrow minded.China is not isolated from the world you know? ( There might be one country that is though)
Well people over here in Europe often go on about how narrow minded and stupid Amercians are, I still don't really agree with them, but there must be reasons. Well...you're one of those kind, i guess. Open your eyes dude

I don't follow your line of thought. I'm not sure how I'm narrow-minded and stupid because I'm curious about how cultures develop, and how interests propagate from one culture to another. The 'how' question is valid regardless of culture. Perhaps a better analogy would've been the first set of Americans that became interested in Japanese anime. At this point, it's fairly mainstream, but there was a time that it very far outside, and nearly completely unavailable. What is it that attracts someone, in general, to 'fringe' culture?

Secondary question is probably easier to answer, which is: how did they get exposed to it in the first place? Hip-hop is PROBABLY popular enough here that MANY people will be exposed to it without trying, but from what sources?

I had one listener send some useful comments in that regard, and I'll talk about them in a later episode.

Oh, and if music and art are so universal, and spread in a natural and obvious way - when was the last time you went to see a Kun opera? I'm sure there's a huge, and growing, body of fans of the art in Europe.

tek.
